What Is Aeration?
Aeration works to loosen compacted soil, which can keep water and nutrients from reaching the roots of your lawn. With aeration, holes are punctured a few inches into the soil using an aerator.
Aeration may be necessary if you start to notice compacted soil. Several factors can lead to compacted soil, such as:
- Frequently allowing cars or heavy equipment on the grass.

- Waterlogging from heavy rains and flooding.
What Is Dethatching?
Dethatching works by removing thatch, which is dead grass and other organic matter, from the top of the soil. During the dethatching process, equipment such as verticutters or dethatching rakes are used to loosen the vegetation so it can be pulled up and raked away.
Your property may develop thatch due to infrequent mowing, shallow watering or too much fertilizer.
When Should You Consider Dethatching and Lawn Aeration Services?
When you’re looking to aerate your lawn, you want to do it during the peak growing season of the grass so that it can recover quickly. For cold-season grasses, aim for early spring or fall. For warm-season grasses, late spring through early summer is often best.
Dethatching is ideal in the late winter months when you will want to remove dead vegetation so grass can grow. Thatch can be beneficial for your lawn during the winter months since it can provide a little extra protection from the cold. If you plan to aerate your lawn, you’ll want to dethatch before beginning the aeration process.
